Many have tries to sing the songs of Elvis, few succeed in bringing them to life the way he did. He sang his songs with a voice filled with charisma, power, and a variety in range that few can match. His music fills us with a sense of wonder; much like the lyrics of the song; “The Wonder of You”. His memory lives on the music he left behind; “Long Live the King of Rock and Roll!”

2010 marks the 33rd anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, yet he still remains one of the most influential musical artists of all time.  Each year thousands of fans mark the anniversary with a visit Memphis, TN to Graceland and the meditation garden where Elvis is buried beside his father and mother.

Elvis Presley, King of the Music World Then and Now

What could possibly be said about Elvis Presley that has not already been said a thousand times? He has been dead for over thirty years, yet his music sells constantly, memorabilia is constantly being sought, and documentaries appear every year on the anniversaries’ of his birth and his death. His musical talent, charisma, and famous good looks, earned him the title, King of Rock and Roll; a title he deserved and has never lost; no one else has ever been able to dethrone him, and probably never will.

Born to poor parents in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935, he and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948. Elvis loved Memphis and the deep musical heritage of the town he would forever call home. He learned to love gospel music, and a deep abiding love of soulful R&B music was born on Beale Street, when as a teenager he would listen in the windows and doors of backstreet nightclubs. His musical talent blended the soul of R&B, the rhythms of Rock and Roll and created a unique sound all his own. He managed to blur the dividing lines of racial and social barriers with his range of influences on musical genres. He challenged the rules of the era and brought entire cultures together to share the pleasure and deep emotions he shared with his music.

Elvis starred in 33 movies, made history with his television appearances and live concerts. The televised “Aloha from Hawaii” concert in January 1973, was the first world-wide satellite broadcast, and reached almost 2 billion viewers. But in between the teenage years and rocking out from Hawaii, Elvis gave the world 131 different albums, and singles that earned him gold, platinum, and double platinum. With over one billion records sold, he topped every record, and has never been beaten in the record sales for a single artist.

Elvis was nominated for 14 Grammy Awards, and won three; and he was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the age of 36. His music touched the hearts, minds, and souls of millions of people world wide and he was appreciated and loved by people from every race, culture and continent. Others in the music, entertainment, and sports world who were icons in their own right, have voiced many times their appreciation for the effort Elvis put into his music and the impact he had on their lives.

Elvis was known as a generous man to friends and family, and even strangers; but the true depth of his generosity was not divulged until after his death, at his personal request. His philanthropic work knew no bounds for the people of Memphis and others who benefitted then and now from the Elvis Presley Charities governed by Elvis Enterprises.

The glittering, skin-tight body suit he made popular first in the Aloha from Hawaii concert, became Elvis’ trademark outfit. When he ended a concert and spread out the flying wingspan of an eagle on the back of his cape, he soared in our eyes above and beyond normal man.  He was a man with a mans weaknesses, and faults, but to Elvis fans around the world his music took us to higher planes where we could also soar above the normal and for a little while listen to the sounds of Angels in the voice of a man.

Those of us who were lucky enough to see him in person, know the full affect Elvis could have on a crowd; but that does not explain the fact that over half of the visitors to Elvis’ Graceland home and burial spot in 2009, 32 years after his death were under the age of 35. Elvis Presley is still affecting the crowds and his music is still alive.
